Job Location: San Antonio Texas
Position Type: Full-time Project-Based Outsource Role
Salary Range: $108,000 - $120,000 (commensurate based on experience)

Duration: This position has no guaranteed multi-year duration and is dependent on project needs and funding availability provided by Apex’s customer. That funding is reevaluated annually.

Role Overview:
This role is all about assisting a specific Apex client with environmental safety & health. The incumbent will be involved in a variety of projects related to industrial safety, employee accident prevention, industrial hygiene and occupational health issues, and environmental compliance.
The role will routinely involve a blend of (1) workplace / shop floor employee safety and health engagement, and (2) safety, health and environmental program management effectiveness evaluations and continuous improvement support. The shop floor aspect of this role routinely requires a great deal of walking. This customer’s site is large and sprawling; it can routinely require walking a quarter or half mile in order to reach a specific interior or exterior location where the incumbent conducts work.
The incumbent will also provide project leadership and project management functions as needed. Perhaps most importantly, the incumbent will be an energetic self-starter with the ability to work independently and produce results within budget and timeframe.

Your Responsibilities as an Apex Environmental Health and Safety Professional:
Safety & Health Support:
  • Providing comprehensive occupational safety and health consulting services to the client, including:
    • Conducting reviews of existing safety and health programs - from either a regulatory compliance perspective, or an effectiveness-in-action perspective.
    • Conducting shop floor observations focused on identifying, assessing and risk-ranking employee exposures to injury.
    • Devising solution options aimed at mitigating employee injury exposures.
    • Providing the client with hands-on assistance with the implementation of chosen solutions.
    • Monitoring the effectiveness of solutions implemented. Have they stood the test of time?
    • Tracking and analyzing clients’ employee injury experience, looking for trends, common themes, and potential high leverage accident prevention activities.
  • In collaboration with Apex project managers, coordinates and executes industrial safety projects within set organizational procedures and standards.
  • In close routine collaboration with the customer, designs, implements and executes an agreed-to service plan. Monitors and reports progress on plan completion as directed. Works with numerous internal and external stakeholders in the interest of achieving desired overall project velocity.
  • Acts as an advisor to the customer on occupational safety and health issues.
  • Provides input to project managers, client relationship managers, or business development staff on potential new EHS support projects. Participates in business development activities as directed.
Environmental Support:
  • Assists in environmental programs, such as: air quality, stormwater, wastewater, hazardous waste, and permitting.
  • Implements and monitors the client’s environmental management systems, processes, and programs.
  • Assesses the impact of emerging environmental issues, legislation, and regulations on company operations.
  • Acts as primary site interface with regulatory agencies.

What we are looking for:
  • Candidates must be a ‘U.S. Person’ as defined by 22 CFR 120.15.
  • Bachelor's degree required – ideally, in a science or engineering field.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience required in the environmental health and safety field.
  • Experience in manufacturing-&-assembly industries / heavy industry settings a plus. Experience in the aerospace and defense or automotive industry a further plus.
  • 3+ years of experience interpreting environmental regulations and applying knowledge to change environmental compliance and permitting policy.
  • Possess an extensive knowledge of EHS technical subject matter and how to apply it in real-life settings. Highly familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the EHS field. Just a few topics where strong technical knowledge is required:

    • Powered Industrial Truck Safety
    • Contractor Safety
    • Broad spectrum OSHA Regulations understanding
    • Transporting hazardous waste
    • Waste Categorization
    • Stormwater Sampling
    • Knowledge of wastewater treatment operations
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • A great deal of creativity and self-starter initiative is required. This position entails routine ongoing work and negotiation with numerous customer stakeholders – all of whom need to be ‘satisfied’ with respect to project purpose, scope, and tactics.
  • Relies on experience and judgment paired with the overall work statement provided by the customer to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Ensures compliance with all EHS regulations and keeps abreast of any changes to laws and regulations that impact the organization.
  • Strong technical writing skills, the ability to successfully multi-task, safety awareness, and a good record and understanding of safe work practices
  • Experience with data management and report preparation.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Typically, local/regional only; potential occasional travel nationwide
  • As noted above, a great deal of walking is required, on a daily basis.
Other Considerations:
  • The initially established duration of this outsource position is decided by the client, not Apex. The client has stated (July, 2024) that the initially established duration is approximately one (1) year.
  • The position may be extended past the initially established end date if (1) the client requests an extension, or (2) the client creates another defined and generally similar/related role for which they feel the candidate is a good fit (change of scope). The candidate’s level of performance as determined by the client is pivotal in this regard.
  • This Contract/Project-Based position has no guaranteed multi-year duration and while we aim to provide continuity of employment whenever possible, the nature of this position may involve gaps between projects, potential conversion to part-time employment status for a period of time, or administrative termination of employment at the conclusion of the duration end date.
